  1. a fraction is an expression where two numbers placed above and below a division line with the top value named the numerators and denominators

    ReplyDelete
  2. a simple example of fraction in life is when u tell time

    ReplyDelete
  3. a fraction can be identified when there are three components: a numerator, a denominator and a division sign. for example:
    23x + 95y/ 68z -37t:
    23x + 95y is the numerator
    68z - 37t is the denominator
and / is our division sign.

    ReplyDelete
  4. fraction could be identified by their numerator and denominator which is separated by a devision sign.

  5. To me a fraction basically shows a part of a whole. or a part of something bigger. For example i am a trinidadian yes i am one man but i am a part of a whole nation.

  6. OK NOW I SEE YOUR ANSWERS TO THIS QUESTION
"a fraction is an expression where two numbers placed above and below a division line with the top value named the numerators and denominators"
so as you have said 2 numbers
    so is 2.5/5 a fraction?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, 2.5 is a fractional number but not in standard form.

      Delete
  7. fractions are a way of representing decimals which are not whole numbers. fractions are also ways of showing proportions, of the size of one shape to another and even how much times larger an object is..
like a square is 2.5larger than the rectangle... which is 2,1/2, which shows it is twice and a half of the rectangle...

    ReplyDelete
  8. 2.5/5 is a fraction but a complicated one since 2.5 is a fraction and 2.5 /5 is another fraction. so it is a fraction over another.but reeally it is 2.5 divided by 5.
    2,1/2 /5
    5/2 / 5
    2/5 *5
    10/5
    2
which shows that over all the fraction becomes a whole number ..so in the raw form it is a fraction but simplified is a whole number.

    ReplyDelete
  9. ok then so what if we switched them around then
    5/2.5
you say it is a fraction over a fraction but 5 is still a whole number.
so is it a fraction over a fraction or a fraction inside of another fraction?

    ReplyDelete
  10. well the 5 is the numerator and the denominator is 2.5 so it is still a fraction because of the numerator and denominator and division sign..
    5/ 2,1/2
    5/ 5/2
    5*2/5
    10/5
    2

( i have an error in the one above it is 1/2)

    ReplyDelete
  11. ok i understand now and yes your error is noted
so basically a decimal is a different way of writing a fraction

    ReplyDelete
  12. a decimal is a different way of writing fractions. since it is the linear version of writing it. but it is more difficult since with fractions u would have a half and then to write it in decimals, you would have to divide 2 by one which would give .5 . or even 1/4 which is .25. so writing it in it's linear format is good if your using calculators buy if u have to work it out on the whole it is much simplier to work as a fraction..

    ReplyDelete
  13. ok so my next question how do i know that .25 is 1/4. Like what if i did not know that. and i was given a decimal and aske dto change it to a fraction. For example .56

    ReplyDelete
  14. for .25. if ur given 1/4 u will have to divide 4 by 1
    so
    4/1
    4 into 1=0
there for the decimal point is places and a zero added to the 1.
now it is 4 into 10. u will get 2(8). with a remainder of 2 and a zero is added.
now it is 4 into 20 and u will get 5 with no remainder..
    therefore the answer is .25

    ReplyDelete
  15. and to go from decimals to fraction you would place .25 over 100. the point is 1 and the other numbers are zero's. and 25 over 100 and u simplify,,and would end up with 1/4.

    ReplyDelete
  16. so Mr. GL seeing as no one has yet answered the question say i was your 9 year old brother and you wanted HAD NO OTHER CHOICE but to explain fractions to me how would you.
note i am not the brightest bulb in the box.

    ReplyDelete
  17. ok well fractions..are not whole number like half or a quarter like a slice of pizza or cake is a fraction it is a piece of a whole.. a fraction represents a piece of one thing... it could be add or subtracted to other fractions or whole numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  18. so then ok they are parts of a whole how do i write them??
how do i know which number goes where??
and how am i sure it is correct?
is there a way to double check?

    ReplyDelete
  19. to know where the numbers goes the total number of pieces goes to the bottom and the number which u want which could either be the remainder or total u have goes on top.
to check..ammm . u just have to know the base number which is the total and the numerator which is the part u have or looking for..
i not sure of a way to double check it..

  20. A fraction is used for studying, recreation and management.

Fractions is used in everyday life. fractions are used to share, so you won't use the whole thing, for example you won't eat a whole roti, so you cut it in 1/4 and eat a 1/4.

fractions can be identified by 12/7 this is a fraction which means 12 divided into 7 equal parts.

Fractions are necessary to us because we use it everyday, over 100 times a day.

I will explain frations to my 9 year old brother by saying fractions are just like sharing with your friends. you never have the whole thing , it will be shared part for you and part for your friend.

    ReplyDelete
  21. how i thought my little brother fractions lets say we have a pizza and we cut it up in 4equal parts each part would be 1/4 two parts would be 2/4 etc. so if we cut a next pizza in 8 equal parts each part would be 1/8 two parts 2/8 etc.

    ReplyDelete
  22. a fraction is part of a whole
the nuber below indicates how many pieces will make up an entire whole
    or pizza
the number on top indicates how many pieces you have
fractions indicates division you don't have the entire block or whatever

  24. we have to use fractions
you all remember " A World With No Fractions"
it is used to refer to a piece of something.
    a piece of cake, a $20.00 is 1/5 of a $100
    a fraction of time...............

  26. cap_guy, first, with a fraction, we always know that it is part (or parts) of a whole, thing, right?

If we say that we have 12 eggs in a dozen, then 6 eggs would be a fraction of one whole dozen.

Or 6 out of that 12

    As a fraction it's written as 6/12 - 6 out of 12.

The 12 here being the parts that make it a whole dozen, and then 6 being what you have.

Look at another example: If you had a cake, and it's sliced into 8 pieces. Then 8 slices would make One whole cake, right?

If you were given 2 slices from that cake, how much of the whole were you given?

2 out of 8 slices, right?
    That'd be written as 2/8

Let's say that there's a case of soft drink - 24 bottles, and you are given 7 bottles from that case. What fraction were you given?

Try this one. If you know there are 3 cases of soft drink, again with 24 bottles in each case, and you were given 18 bottles, how many bottles were you given?

    ReplyDelete
  27. A fraction is part, some or piece of a whole.a fraction can be identified by looking for a divide sign i.e it has a numerator over a dinominator.
Fractions are used everyday. eg. when u buy a small pizza which have 8 slices and u eat 4 slices you can say that u ate half the pizza. In other words you can put the number of slices eaten over the total no. of slices. therefore 4/8. You can further simplify this fraction by finding a common factor i.e 4 and multiply by both numerator and denomenator.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Fractions are important to us because the give us quick info based on a whole by showing how much it can be divided into, how much is used up from the whole,or how much is needed to make a whole of something.

    ReplyDelete
  29. There are really two types of fractions.
1)improper fractions (ie. the numerator is greater than the denominator)eg.5/2
2)proper fractions. (ie. the numerator is less than the denominator)eg.3/5

generally to get an improper fraction you have to have a mixed number. ie a fraction with a whole number infront of it.

But don't worry about the whole number infront the fraction(mixed number) because it can be boiled down to a simple fraction.(improper fraction).

Here are 2 simple steps to change a mixed number to a improper fraction.
    1) multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator. that will be your numerator.
    2) then put it all over the original demoninator.

    lets say for example.
    2 1/2= (2*2)+1/2
    = 4+1/2
    =5/2

    agreed?

  30. A fraction is a ratio of two values.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Fractions have the form a/b , where a is called the numerator, b is the denominator.

    ReplyDelete
  32. the denominator cannot equal 0 (since division by 0 is undefined).

    ReplyDelete
  33. i would start to teach my brother with practicals.
so i would use a cake, because he loves chocolate cake and relate it to him step by step. currently the cake is a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  34. the i would cut the cake in half , while showing him a written example of a fraction.

    ReplyDelete
  35. then in quarters an show him another written example

    ReplyDelete
  36. then i would take away all the cake and bring them back piece by piece to show addition which entails the determination of the lowest common denominator to bring fractions together.

    ReplyDelete
  37. for example, if we didnt have fractions and you were driving a car you would constantly either be shutting down on the roadways or have to be conscious of how much fuel is in your vehicle.

    ReplyDelete
  38. A fraction is the ratio of two whole numbers, or to put it simply, one whole number divided by another whole number

    ReplyDelete
  39. a fraction is any part of a whole

    ReplyDelete
  40. the purpose of using fractions would be to represent that you have used part of something or a fraction of something.
it can also be used to describe what happened when a certain amount is taken out, altering a value of something.

    ReplyDelete
  41. a fraction can be identified by the value containing a numerator and a de-nominator.
bith separated by a division sign.

    ReplyDelete
  42. to my 9 year old bro, i would say that a fraction is when you take a whole item and share it into any amount of parts.

    ReplyDelete
  43. a fraction is two values seperated by a division sign.................

    ReplyDelete
  44. a fraction is used to identify a no of pices from a given whole

    ReplyDelete
  45. orrrrrr one whole divided into many pieces. everything in the world is fractions we use it every second of the day!!!!!! example like am just one person out of the whole populated world.............

    ReplyDelete
  46. a fraction can be identifed by placing a division sign between two given numbers. withone number being placed above the other

    ReplyDelete
  47. south zone, i agree but you have to note the names of those numbers.
which are the numerator and denominator.

    ReplyDelete
  48. lana you can also have a fraction divided by another fraction also.
it is not always a whole number/by a whole number.

    ReplyDelete
  49. A FRACTION IS A PART OR SEGMENT OF A WHOLE

    ReplyDelete
  50. a fraction is number used to represent a part or a segment of a whole(correction)

    ReplyDelete
  51. a fraction can be identified by the components it posesses a)a numerator, b) a denominator, c)a devision line or sign or in a worded equation it can by represented by "of" eg. 8 of 10 applesa ared eaten what fraction is left ?

    ReplyDelete
  52. fraction is used to distribut parts of a whole in certain ratios

    ReplyDelete
  53. if i had a nine year old brother i would tell him

if you had a bag of crayons that had 6 colours and i told you to draw me a circle and colour for me using the six colours equal parts untill the circle is full
then i would ask him how many circles he sees which is one and how many parts he sees which is six and how many coloured part he sees which is six therefore the assuming he used i would ask him how many red parts is there which is one then i would tell him take the over all value of the whole and call it the denominator and the segment the numerator and place it over the division line

    ReplyDelete
  54. i would tell my nine year old bro that fractions help show us wat we hav n how many each division or person gets out of wat we hav
    example
mummy gave me $500 and told me split it equally between two of us
each of us would gt 1/2 of the money
    meaning we hav $500
the top number says how much of the total we get n the bottomnumber says how much people or shares there are

    ReplyDelete
  55. a fraction is numbers sperated by a division sign. the number on top is called the numerator and the bottom value is called the numerator.

    ReplyDelete
  56. In the case of numbers, a fraction may be defined as the quotient, or division of the two numbers...it may also be defined as small part or an item that makes up a whole

    ReplyDelete
  57. Fractions are usually a way of showing how an item, in this case, a number, has been split up into smaller ones...or parts of the whole, as the case may be

    ReplyDelete
  58. A fraction can be identified by a number on top (known as a numerator) over a number below (known as the denominator) separated by a division sign... eg. 2/3 (technically its not on the bottom here...but hopefully its understandable)

    ReplyDelete
  59. If i had a 9 year old brother, i would tell him, a fraction is a piece of a whole number. it is found by dividing a whole number by another whole number. they are usually left as the number being divided over the number dividing it...example 1/4 is the number 1, being divided by 4, which is a quarter. (thank god i dont have a 9 YO brother)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Fractions are important to us as they show how a number is divided by another, and from that will be able to tell us how many parts make up a whole.for example...1/3....it is a third of a whole, there it requires 3 thirds to make up a whole

    ReplyDelete
  61. A fraction is simply a part of a whole. It consits of mainly 2 parts, which are both very important, the denominator(the bottom part) and the numerator(the top part). If the numerator's value is larger than the denominator's, it is refered to as an improper fraction, but if it is not it is called a proper fraction.

    ReplyDelete
  62. To me a fraction is the ratio of two whole numbers, or to put it simply, one whole number divided by another whole number. We write a fraction like this:6/8
The top part of the fraction is called the numerator and is also referred to as the dividend of the fraction. The bottom part is called the denominator and is also referred to as the divisor of the fraction.

    ReplyDelete
  63. there are three different types of fractions. there are proper fraction, which is where the numerator is smaller than the denominator eg. 2/5. then there are improper fractions where the numerator is larger than the denominator eg. 8/3 and the final one is mixed numbers this is another way of expressing an improper fraction eg. from the improper fraction eg. before 8/3 as a mixed number it would be written as 2 2/3

    ReplyDelete
  64. a fraction is part of a whole. it cannot be equal to a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  65. fractions are used to represent small parts or amounts of a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  66. a fraction can be identified by 2 numbers separated by a slash. the upper number called the numerator and the bottom number the denoinator

    ReplyDelete
  67. a fraction expresses part of a group and can represent a ratio or division....its consists of a numerator an a denominator...eg 3/4 with 3 being the numerator and 4 being the denominator

    ReplyDelete
  68. you could never tell a friend to break a cookie in half 1/2 to share with you. You could only tell them to break it into two pieces. a glass with water could never be described as half full. there would be no such thing as half past the hour with timekeeping. you could never say you are halfway there when traveling.

    ReplyDelete
  69. to my 9yr old brother lets pretend that the denominator is a bag full of equal pieces. each piece is a fraction of the whole bag. every single piece makes up the entire bag, or 1 bag. another example is a pizza. if the denominator is 8, then that means the pizza is cut into 8 slices. if the dominator is 4, then the pizza is cut into quarters.one slice will be 1/4, 3 slices will be 3/4. the numerator is the top number. for example if i gave u 2 slices out of the pizza that was cut into 8 slices, u would have 2/8.

    ReplyDelete
  70. a fraction is a number that names part of a whole or part of a group..

    ReplyDelete
  71. if wasn't for fraction breakfast this morning wouldn't be possible because i ate quater roti and if wasn't for fractions i would've eaten a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  72. a fraction can be identified as a numerator divided by denominator..

    ReplyDelete
  73. i would use a cake as an example.. the amount of slices he ate divided by how much slices are there..ex he ate 2 slices out of 16 equal pieces therefore he ate 2/16 which is equivalent to 1/8

    ReplyDelete
  74. a fraction has a numerator and a denominator ie. a top no. and a bottom no. and has a division sign.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The main importantance of fractions is to show portions of something. It is a way of saying how much is used or being examined out of a whole...

    ReplyDelete
  76. A fraction is identified by a numerator, a denominator and a equal sign....

    ReplyDelete
  77. To my nine year old brother:
a fraction shows how much of something which is a whole is being used. a fraction is a piece out of a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  78. for example if mommy baked a cake for ten childen in your class and cut it into ten slices. You took the first piece which means you took 1 out of the ten pieces or 1/10....

    ReplyDelete
  79. for example there are twelve kids on a cricket team and the coach said...
i want six of you to play and six of you to sit out the game. that mean 6 of the 12 kids will play or 6/12 which is 1/2 of the team...

    ReplyDelete
  80. fractions are necessary to us because they are part of everyday life. we use fractions all time without even realising it.. we are always using a portion of somthing, of doing a portion of work and these are fractions.

    ReplyDelete
  81. A fraction is a way of representing division of a 'whole' into 'parts'. It has the form

    where the
Numerator is the number of parts chosen
    and the
Denominator is the total number of parts.

  82. 2.5/5 is a fraction but a complicated one since 2.5 is a fraction and 2.5 /5 is another fraction. so it is a fraction over another.but really it is 2.5 divided by 5.
    2,1/2 /5
    5/2 / 5
    2/5 *5
    10/5
    2
which shows that over all the fraction becomes a whole number ..so in the raw form it is a fraction but simplified is a whole number.

    ReplyDelete
  84. a fraction is part of a whole or a whole that has been divided

    ReplyDelete
  85. the purpose of fractions is to show that something is part of a whole or to replace a decimal as sum decimals can long eg. 0.8333333 = 5/6

    ReplyDelete
  86. a fraction could be identified because it has a numerator and denominator and a devision sign which separates them eg. 5/6

    ReplyDelete
  87. i would explain about fractions to my 9 years old brother by using an example such as an apple, i would cut it into 4 equal pieces and tell him that each piece is a fraction of the whole apple (the four pieces). hence: each piece = 1/4pieces

    ReplyDelete
  88. a fraction is used to show the number of pieces in a whole

    ReplyDelete
  89. A fraction is a way of representing division of a 'whole' into 'parts'.

    ReplyDelete
  90. or a numerator divided by a deniminator

    ReplyDelete
  91. A fraction is a part of a hole number represented by a numerator and denominator which is separated by a devision sign.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Fractions are considered important to us since it is the division of whole things in to smaller parts making it possible for us to obtain a portion of of a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  93. a fraction can be identified when there is a numerator, a denominator and is separated from a division sign. it is used to represent a part of a whole number

    ReplyDelete
  94. to explain fractions to a nine year old i would say that a fraction is when you take a whole item and share it into a number of portions. eg when a pizza is cut in 2 pieces u put the whole (1) and divide it (/) by the amount of pieces (2) and u will get your fraction: 1/2.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Fractions are important to us because the give us quick info based on a whole by showing how much it can be divided into or how much it is divided into. The main importantance of fractions is to show portions of a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  96. A number expressed as a quotient, in which a numerator is divided by a denominator. In a simple fraction, both are integers. A complex fraction has a fraction in the numerator or denominator. In a proper fraction, the numerator is less than the denominator. If the numerator is greater, it is called an improper fraction and can also be written as a mixed number—a whole-number quotient with a proper-fraction remainder. Any fraction can be written in decimal form by carrying out the division of the numerator by the denominator.

    ReplyDelete
  97. they are useful as expressive quantities ..to denote a size or a value

    ReplyDelete
  98. it is identified by dividing its upper value (numerator) from the lower value (denominator). x/y
and is commonly given in its simplest form, that is a proper fraction

    ReplyDelete
  99. to my 9 yr old brother :
"is one number on top of another number !!

  100. A fraction is a representation of part of a whole using "how much" divided by "the whole"

    ReplyDelete
  101. The purpose of fractions is so that a part can be represented when a whole or wholes are not used.

    ReplyDelete
  102. A fraction can be identified by the division sign [ '/' or in some cases '__' ]

    ReplyDelete
  103. "A fraction is like eating pie" you cant eat the whoole pie so u take part of it.
if u measure the size of the piece you took and divide it by the size of the pie before, you will get a fraction

    ReplyDelete
  104. Fractions are necessary because everything needs to be accounted for. fractions are there to help us account for part or a piece of something

    ReplyDelete
  105. A fraction. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. well as the name implies since we are all future engineeres.a fraction is a pices of a whole something. if u have 28 marbles and u gave john 7 marbles then u gave john 7 out of 28 (7/28) which can be simplified to (1/4)

    ReplyDelete
  106. The purpose of a fraction is to show how a piece of a whole is used. if there were no fractions then everything would have to be in wholes

    ReplyDelete
  107. A fraction can be identified by a divisor and a dividend. or as miss puts it. an upstairs and downstairs. (/)

    ReplyDelete
  108. i would tell my little brother. a fraction is like sharing a cake. a person doesn't just stuff a whole cake in his mouth. he cuts piece and eats that. and he can also share the pieces with his friends. 6 slices of cake out of 12 slices is 6 out of 12 which is (6/12) or (1/2)

    ReplyDelete
  109. Fractions are necessary because evreything cannot be done wholly at a time. Parts or Pieces are very important in the world. the lord did not make the world 100% land. he made water and air also. so the world is fractions

    ReplyDelete
  110. A fraction is number written with a numerator and a denominator, in which both are natural numbers. Hence it can be identified by a division sign seperating both numbers

    ReplyDelete
  111. i would tell my brother the pizza daddy bought can be cut into any number of pieces so that everyone at dinner can have a piece. Each slice is a part, or fraction, of the whole pizza...he can add fractions...if i had two slices of pizza and then adds another. You can subtract them, too... if there are two slices left and you take one

    ReplyDelete
  112. There are really two types of fractions.
    1. proper
    2. improper

    ReplyDelete
  113. fractions are used to show parts of a total. the top number called the numerator and the bottom number called the denominator

    ReplyDelete
  114. i would tell my brother, that fractions are used to share parts of a whole. we can use a cake for instance. a birthday cake is cut into slices and is shares. it it sliced into 10 pieces. the wole/total pieces goes to the bottom. and how many of the total goes to the top of the line. for example, i ate 2 slices, that would mean i took 2 out of 10 there stating it as a fraction = 2/10

    ReplyDelete
  115. a fraction is not a whole no, it represents portions of a whole no.

    ex 3/4

the top no of the fraction is called the numerator and the below no is called the denominator

  116. a fraction is any portion of a whole

    ReplyDelete
  117. the purpose of using fractions is to give the exact amount instead of rounding it of to the nearest whole

    ReplyDelete

  119. explainin fractions to a 9yr old using money; $1 = a whole, $0.50= 1/2
    $1 + $0.50= $1.50 which is a 1 1/2

    $0.25 is 1/4 of a $1
    $0.75 is 3/4 of $1

  125. Fractions are usually a way of showing how an item, in this case, a number, has been split up into smaller ones...or parts of the whole, as the case may be

  126. A fraction can be identified by a number on top (known as a numerator) over a number below (known as the denominator) separated by a division sign... eg. 2/3 (technically its not on the bottom here...but hopefully its understandable)

  127. If i had a 9 year old brother, i would tell him, a fraction is a piece of a whole number. it is found by dividing a whole number by another whole number. they are usually left as the number being divided over the number dividing it...example 1/4 is the number 1, being divided by 4, which is a quarter.

  128. Fractions are important to us as they show how a number is divided by another, and from that will be able to tell us how many parts make up a whole.for example...1/3....it is a third of a whole, there it requires 3 thirds to make up a whole

  129. fractions are a way of representing decimals which are not whole numbers. fractions are also ways of showing proportions, of the size of one shape to another and even how much times larger an object is..
like a square is 2.5larger than the rectangle... which is 2,1/2, which shows it is twice and a half of the rectangle...

  133. A fraction has 3 well known components...
    example: 3 << Numerator
    - << Vinculumn
    4 << Denominator

    i.e. 3/4...

the vinculumn represents a division function.

Or if you have a cake and you divide it int two equal parts you have just began the process of fractions
